It’s time to look at mental health differently.

A common sense approach to support based on years of counseling, teaching, coaching and mentoring.

Dr. Rhein earned his MA and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Boston University, one of the oldest and most distinguished psychology programs in the country.  He currently runs a practice focused on working with high-achieving high schoolers, college students and recent grads.

As a psychologist who has worked in schools for over 20 years, Dr. Rhein has come to recognize therapy as being as integral to health as diet and exercise, and as something that can benefit anyone - whether they have a diagnosis or not.  As the adage goes, “You don’t need to be sick in order to get better.”

For adolescents and young adults in particular, feeling seen and supported, and having regular access to the clarifying perspectives that therapy provides can be transformative as they work to define goals, harness strengths and honor their potential.

Psychology is much bigger than just medicine, or fixing unhealthy things. It’s about education, work, marriage - it’s even about sports. What I want to do is see psychologists working to help people build strengths in all these domains.

If you plan on being anything less than you are capable of being, you will probably be unhappy all the days of your life.
— Abraham Maslow

Prior to his graduate training Dr. Rhein worked at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, as part of Dr. Gil Noam’s research team evaluating the university’s RALLY mentorship program in Boston Public Schools.

After entering Boston University’s doctoral program, Dr. Rhein trained with Dr. David Barlow, one of the preeminent figures in the field of Cognitive Behavioral Psychology.  In addition, he completed a two-year practicum at the university’s Center for Anxiety & Related Disorders, a second practicum at Mass General Hospital and an undergraduate teaching fellowship.  As a predoctoral intern at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Rhein completed an additional 2,500 hours of clinical training, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Baltimore Research & Education Foundation.  His dissertation, completed in 2001, was among the first to compare therapy conducted in person to telepsychology.

Following his graduation, Dr. Rhein served as Associate Director of the American Psychological Association’s Office of Program Consultation & Accreditation before pivoting to the world of independent schools.  For over 20 years, Dr. Rhein has directed guidance and learning programs, taught and coached at boarding and day schools in the U.S. and abroad, including The American School in Switzerland and the Landon School.

When one man, for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself.
— Jacques Yves Cousteau

Dr. Rhein maintains a private practice that offers the following services via telepsychology:

  • Dr. Rhein provides psychotherapy for adolescents and young adults.

  • Dr. Rhein has extensive experience conducting psychoeducational testing, as well as interpreting and demystifying test reports conducted by other psychologists. He ensures that test results are understandable, and just as importantly, that clients have a clear sense of how to use and benefit from the findings in real life.

  • Sometimes individuals and families can feel confused about their treatment options. Clients may have no current treatment plan, or have a plan that feels ineffective, overly complicated or unsustainable. Dr. Rhein works with clients to clarify presenting issues and thoughtfully consider available treatment options.

The difference between a good life and a bad life is how well you walk through the fire.
